Enrichment

Starr King offers students a variety of extracurricular activities and programs to discover and nurture their talents, and to support their academic growth.

Physical Education

Playworks (http://www NULL.playworks NULL.org) supports learning by providing safe, healthy, and inclusive play and physical activity to schools at recess and throughout the entire school day. At Starr King we have a trained, full-time coach who creates structured, safe opportunities for play through “class game times” and recess activities. In addition to teaching our children how to play and incorporate physical activity in their daily lives, last year Coach DJ coordinated the renovation of our playground and a Run 4 Recess fundraising event for our school.

Theater

StageWrite (http://www NULL.stagewrite NULL.org) is an arts-in-education organization that uses theater to build literacy skills, community, and self-esteem with elementary school children through classroom theater residencies in order to engage and inspire student learning.

Our students go through program that moves from improvisational story dramas in kindergarten and first grade, into the use of literature-to-life techniques in second and third grades, and finally onto the creation of original pieces of theatrical writing by fourth and fifth grade students. This culminates in the performance of select fifth grade plays by professional actors at the deYoung Museum.

Playwright Comments Reflections Sheets
December 2011

Seeing my play performed by professional actors was amazing, like it came to life. I liked how they made it funnier than it was supposed to be which was better. – Josie

I felt nervous before it was played but when I saw it it made me feel proud of my writing although it needed some touch ups. – Maeve

I started laughinig in the middle which is a good thing cause that means I liked it. – Abbey

My song was so good I would have never imagined it that great. – Jet

It was like all my ideas and my hard work came together. I was so proud of my play because it was performed by professional actors and it was an honor. – Jack

The person who played Cecilia was a bit too enthusiastic for a two year old space blanket! If I could write another play as a second chance it would be different, probably inspired by a book about understanding religion and philosophy and the greek gods through jokes. – Ellie

I liked how the actors exaggerated a lot! – Lilly

It was like watching a movie I wrote. I felt happy but they should have said “h2o” instead of ”water.” – Nathan

It’s like a once in a life time thing. – Durrell

Seeing actors perform your play is like gold. I felt nervous and happy and excited at the same time. – Ethan

Art

SFUSD art teachers instruct students in a variety of art forms and projects.

Books for Breakfast

A literacy enrichment program where students read books in the cafeteria before school starts. Student progress is tracked and prizes awarded for completing reading goals.

Home Literacy Project

Leveled books are sent home for families to read with their children as an extension of classroom learning to reinforce and develop literacy skills.

College Bound Program

This program exposes students to the process and benefits of applying to and attending college. A ‘college bound’ curriculum is paired with field trips to local colleges to get students and families thinking early about higher education, and more importantly, to instill in students the idea that college is within their reach and a viable choice for their future.

Mentoring Program

Students identified to benefit from having an adult mentor are matched with a volunteer Starr King staff member. Mentors and students meet weekly and engage in a variety of activities that encourage, support and assist students in areas related to school success.
