Disaster Drill
When the big one hits, Starr King will be one of the best places to be in the city, because of our exceptional preparedness. Thanks to all the staff and students who made last Thursday’s drill such a success. We’re ready! And thanks especially to parents Dan Tan and Sara Buecher who played the role of “distraught parent” so very well. Their screams of “They’re too young to die!” and “Where is my child?” added a great deal to the realism of the event. We also had two ‘hurt’ kids – one in the upper grade and one at the primary and a guest star appearance by Gerry Gomez as ‘The Injured Teacher.’ The students evacuated well and staff were able to get to the second stage of preparing kids for parent pick up. We got good reviews from the SFFD on our level of preparedness. Next year there will be four drills (plus the monthly) that will be a bit more involved each time.

StageWrite Show
Starr King sold out all 370 seats at the Brava theater on Friday for the annual StageWrite show. This remarkable program begins with our Kindergarten classes and each year the same actors and writers work with all Starr King students to learn to express, act, create and write, culminating in 5th grade project in which each student writes a play. Spirit Day!
Grades 3 – 5
Friday, May 18, 1:30 – 2:30
Each student will receive a passport from his or her teacher, then they will go between various activity centers on the play yard, organized by Coach DJ. They may include Basketball, a 4-Square tournament, dodgeball, a relay race, dance in Bungalow B, bowling, a sack race and an arts and crafts center. Students who collect at least 5 stamps will earn a popsicle from their classroom teacher.

Spring Concert
Tuesday, May 22, 2pm. The fourth and fifth grade instrumental Spring Concert. All performers report to the auditorium at 1:30pm.

Got outgrown uniforms?
As you clear out drawers getting ready for summer, please consider donating any outgrown uniforms to the office for next year’s students. If they’re clean and still in good condition, they can be used for students who’ve had accidents or gotten dirty or who forget to wear theirs. And as you buy uniforms this summer, consider grabbing and extra set to donate to the office for families who can’t afford the.

2012 Summer Playdates
Come meet incoming Starr King families. Let’s welcome our new families and relieve some of those pre-kindergarten jitters. If you have a child in the incoming Kindergarten class, stay connected to your fellow kindergarten families by signing onto the class of 2018 yahoo group. Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SK2018. Oh, and if you’d like, bring a snack to the playdates to share.

When you use scrip to pay for your groceries, Starr King earns 10% at no additional cost to you. Think of it as a prepaid grocery purchase with a nice commission to the school. You can buy scrip from Maureen Persico in multiples of $20 and $50. Make checks payable to STARR KING PTA. You can also send a SASE to Maureen Persico, 4026 Folsom St., SF 94110 with a check made out to Starr King PTA and a note specifying which grocery store scrip you want.

Disaster Drill
Starr King will be having a disaster drill on Thursday, May 10, at 9:30 AM. Our drill will be an earthquake simulation that will include “variables” that we might expect to occur in the event of a real emergency. Emotionally distraught parents, an injured staff member, and injured students will likely be among some of the “curves” we introduce into our process.

We are one of the few sites in the city practicing emergency preparedness to this level. The drill will give our staff, teachers and students the skills they need should The Big One ever hit during school hours.

StageWrite Advanced Playwriting Show
This will feature plays by seven Starr King 5th graders.
