Disaster Drill
When the big one hits, Starr King will be one of the best places to be in the city, because of our exceptional preparedness. Thanks to all the staff and students who made last Thursday’s drill such a success. We’re ready! And thanks especially to parents Dan Tan and Sara Buecher who played the role of “distraught parent” so very well. Their screams of “They’re too young to die!” and “Where is my child?” added a great deal to the realism of the event. We also had two ‘hurt’ kids – one in the upper grade and one at the primary and a guest star appearance by Gerry Gomez as ‘The Injured Teacher.’ The students evacuated well and staff were able to get to the second stage of preparing kids for parent pick up. We got good reviews from the SFFD on our level of preparedness. Next year there will be four drills (plus the monthly) that will be a bit more involved each time.

StageWrite Show
Starr King sold out all 370 seats at the Brava theater on Friday for the annual StageWrite show. This remarkable program begins with our Kindergarten classes and each year the same actors and writers work with all Starr King students to learn to express, act, create and write, culminating in 5th grade project in which each student writes a play. Seven of those plays were performed at Brava to a standing-room audience. It even got mentioned on TV: http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/video?id=8658691&pid=null&syndicate=syndicate&section= (http://abclocal NULL.go NULL.com/kgo/video?id=8658691&pid=null&syndicate=syndicate&section=)

Nutrition Education ending, long live the Nutrition Program!

The Nutrition Education Project has been at Starr King for the past four years, with Ms. Frances Wong as our Site Nutrition Coordinator (SNC) for the past three years. Students have tried papaya, tasted cucumbers, and learned to love and ask for kale as part of this wide-ranging effort to get them to eat more fruits and vegetables.

This month marks the end of the Nutrition Education Project, as Starr King’s student population has shifted. With less than than 50% of our school population qualifying for free and reduced lunch, we are no longer eligible for the funding which made this program possible. We would need to be at 60% free/reduced lunch in order to qualify to have a SNC on site.

On the bright side, as a school we raised funds through our Wellness Walk-a-thon that will be allocated to continuing Nutrition Education in some capacity next year. Exactly what that will look like will be clearer next year, but for now – munch on a tasty mango or chomp on a crispy carrot in tribute to this popular and worthwhile program!

Disaster Drill
Starr King will be having a disaster drill on Thursday, May 10, at 9:30 AM. Our drill will be an earthquake simulation that will include “variables” that we might expect to occur in the event of a real emergency. Emotionally distraught parents, an injured staff member, and injured students will likely be among some of the “curves” we introduce into our process.

We are one of the few sites in the city practicing emergency preparedness to this level. The drill will give our staff, teachers and students the skills they need should The Big One ever hit during school hours.

Shine the Light: Good news here at Starr King

From Carrie Wonzer, SK PTA president:
The outlook for the coming school year at Starr King is very bright. At Tuesday’s SSC meeting, Principal John announced that the school should be able to fill 18 full teaching positions and fund all enrichment activities currently offered (Stagewrite, Playworks and MUST), and a new enrichment activity (Gardening Program). This is all made possible because of additional funds made available by the school district, and the unprecedented success of the PTA’s fundraising efforts.

We went from 16 to 18 teachers, Mr. John said, because we came together as a community to advocate successfully and to raise important funds.

While the school can always use additional resources, we have concluded that we are in a strong enough position to move forward without a late Spring ASK campaign. Those of you who made pledges to a Spring campaign, and those who were planning on contributing, are not off the hook: We’ll be putting together an early pledge effort for the upcoming Fall ASK campaign, which we hope will be the most successful yet.

But for now, we get to end this often tumultuous but always amazing school year at Starr King on a very high note, and with high hopes that we’ll continue to work as a united community towards making Starr King an even better school in the coming year and beyond.

I would like to thank each and every one of you personally for your inspiring commitment to all children at our school. So please come to our final PTA meeting of the year, Wednesday, May 9, at 6:00 at the school cafeteria. We’ll have child care. We’ll have dinner. But most importantly, we’ll have a chance to celebrate the end of a terrific school year, and the beginning of even greater things to come for our children.

Starr King – The Movie!
Thanks to Starr King 2nd grade parent and videographer Seth Grant, who created a fabulous video tour of our school for prospective families. This lets parents who may not have the time or ability to come to our school get a wonderful sense of our community – and it great advertising. You can view it on our website at starrkingschool.net (http://starrkingschool NULL.net). Be warned, though, your kids may make you play it multiple times.

Spring Fling
This year’s Spring Fling was not only the social event of the year, it also netted our school over $34,000! Thanks to all our families for their support and generosity.

And special thanks to the 2012 Spring Fling Committee whose hard work make it all possible: Joanne Lee & Tracy Lee (co-chairs), Iolande Bloxsom, Judy Shei, Olivia Boler, Marie Ciepiela, Larry Winum, Claudia Assis, Carmen Cordovez, Teresa Wong-Jones, Kathy Ramsey, Lani Way; entertainment by Helen and the Starr King Stompers and the many many volunteers.

International Potluck
Thursday, May 3rd from 5:00-7:30 pm in the cafeteria. This year, we will feature a Nutrition Health Fair during the first hour from 5-6:00 pm where you can visit stations, make healthy snacks, and exercise! You don’t want to miss it!

Starr King Community Baseball Night

Shine the Light: Good news here at Starr King

The Learning Garden
Starr King would like to welcome the newest member of it’s teaching staff, our new Garden Coordinator Ms. Jenny. Jenny Woodward is a graduate of Mills College with a degree in Art. She brings a passion for sharing the natural world through exploration, investigation and observation to our students.

Ms. Jenny will spend the remainder of this school year working with the teachers to develop curriculum and helping the students become familiar with the garden. The kids have already weeded all the beds, added fresh soil and begun to plant herbs, vegetables and fruits.

In more garden news, Starr King was accepted at the Occidental Arts and Ecology Workshop, an absolutely amazing week long workshop in ecoliteracy, gardening and integrating the outdoors into the classroom curriculum. The workshop is a give-day residential program in Sonoma; the dates are June 11-15. Two Starr King teachers and Jennifer, will attend. The program will provide us with 18 months of support for our garden and continued free workshops. For more information check out the website at http://www.oaec.org/school-garden.

Spring Fling Raffle
Not to introduce a note of competition into your lives, but most years, one of the Kindergarten classes wins the competition to sell the most raffle tickets for the Spring Fling. So everyone, get selling!

As of Wednesday, we have a new leader in the raffle competition and some fresh contenders! We on the Spring Fling Committee are oh so bolstered by all of your enthusiasm and good-natured trash talk. This is what it’s all about, people—raising funds in a friendly way to support the kids and staff of our fabulous school.

But enough of the preamble. You’ve probably already skipped to the stats! Here they are:

  • 1st place: Room 109 — 248 tickets
  • 2nd place: Room 114 — 225 tickets
  • 3rd place: Room 100 — 120 tickets
  • 4th place: Room 105 — 108 tickets
  • 5th place: Room 211 AND Bungalow B — 60 tickets each
  • 6th place: Room 205 — 41 tickets
  • 7th place: Room 107 — 34 tickets
  • 8th place: Room 210 — 20 tickets
  • 9th place: Room 111 — 8 tickets

Remember that the top three classes to offload the most raffle tickets win either a 4Cats Art Studio splatter paint party, a pizza-making visit to California Pizza Kitchen, or a tour (with treat!) of Victoria Bakery.

Funds raised from raffle ticket sales go towards the overall goal of raising $25,000 at Spring Fling.

If you need tickets, contact Olivia Boler (oliviaboler@me.com (oliviaboler null@null me NULL.com)), Iolande Bloxsom (iolande@bloxsom.org (iolande null@null bloxsom NULL.org)), or Teresa Wong-Jones (tntsf@pacbell.net (tntsf null@null pacbell NULL.net)). Turn in your filled out ticket stubs and money (cash or checks made out to STARR KING PTA) to any of us or to Ms. Carmen or Ms. Christina in the office.

Put your ticket stubs and money in a sealed envelope with your name and classroom number. Include a note with number of stubs and amount of money enclosed.

PLEASE TURN IN YOUR STUBS AND MONEY BY 4:30 PM, FRIDAY, APRIL 27, TO THE OFFICE.

You can also bring stubs and raffle money to Spring Fling on Sunday, April 29, but they will NOT be counted for the classroom competition. Sorry, we have to draw the line somewhere.

Olivia will be at drop-off on Thursday and Friday mornings; at 2:40 pick-up on Thursday; and at the office on Friday at 4:30, to collect the last of the tickets before the Big Day on Sunday!

Thank you so much for all your support!

SCHOOL NEWS

STRANGERS
Aptos Middle School received a report of a car approaching one of their students after school and asking for directions. The group of four adult males in the car then asked the student to get into their vehicle. The student backed away and refused and was unharmed. Please remind all of your children that if strangers approach them to stay away and to report it to an adult as soon as possible. If they are able, they can run to the closest house and ring the bell, return to the school, or run into a store or a fire department building. Report the incident to the police immediately.

与会人员: Greg John, Guo Qiang Wei, Lisa Huang, Gordon & Shirley Ma, Jennifer Teu, Powen Li & Orson Kong (6:15到达), Joe Zhongxia Qi & Hui Zeng (6:35到达)

Jennifer Teu

Lisa Huang
Powen Li
Jennifer Teu
    • 出席DELAC(联合学区英语学习生顾问委员会)会议
John
Jennifer
Jennifer
Jennifer Vail
John
John
Gordon
John,Christina Quiroz
Joe
